But single-use menstrual products are costly and leave waste behind, and menstrual stigma still gets in the way of girls learning about their own bodies.
EcoFlow Girls sees period care and skills-building as one thing, not two.
Founded by Precious Oluwadamilola Adeleke, EcoFlow Girls is a three-month programme for 150 girls aged 10 to 18. It combines sexual and reproductive health and menstrual health education with a Do-It-Yourself process for making reusable sanitary pads. Girls receive ready-made reusable pads and learn how to make, wash, dry and care for their own using locally sourced materials. The programme also addresses menstrual stigma, body autonomy, self-confidence and the environmental impact of single-use products. To keep learning going after the sessions end, girls are introduced to Edbot.ai and trained to use it. Twenty girls become peer educators through Mini EcoFlow Peer Clubs, carrying menstrual health and sustainability messages into their communities.
